Thrift Shopping = Weird, Weird = Fun

Thrift Shopping = Weird, Weird = Fun

If you think you're too good for thrift shopping and look down on others who do it, then this post is not for you. Neither are my other posts either probably so I hope you figure that out.

Thrift Shopping is dope. One of the best things that exists on this planet. It's also one of the weirdest and maybe that's because I make it weird by looking for odd or interesting things that others may not find worthy of buying. I don't do it as often as I should but when I do go, I usually come out with something interesting for me or someone else. I've bought a cool silver looking goblet, a few antique cameras, an antique film projector, a fake tree branch wreath, vinyl of classic African American musicians, and other items. I even bought most of my shorts and pants that I wore at camp, and now around the house, at a Goodwill because it made no sense to buy new clothes when the used ones looked just fine.

Maybe it, the rush of finding something that I didn't know I needed in my life or the feeling of finding buried treasure when you find something that excites you so much that you just have to spend the $5 and buy it.

I know they say that one man's trash is another man's treasure, or in my case, one persons grandmothers vinyl collection is now my vinyl collection. I like to think that whenever you buy something from a thrift store, the person it belonged to previously was just holding it for you. I say that because sometimes the things you find just seem too perfect or you as a person. Obviously I know that you're actively shopping and searching for something you would like, but you don't know what you're going to find that day that you needed as well.

I went looking for a cool and unique chair for photography purposes one day and I found a bomb silver looking goblet that I just had to have and will come into play in a video project or two later. The Scorpio in me needed it and it kind of reminds me of the Indiana Jones movie where he has to pick the cup that he thinks Jesus drank out of. I can see my goblet among the other shiny and unsuspecting cups.

It's not all junk, but obviously a lot of what you can find in some places are and they aren't worth it, but I you need certain furniture, accent pieces, or clothes for any reason, you should stop by the thrift store. That is, if you don't mind some use and wear. I doubt Macklemore will be there but who knows.

Make sure to always inspect something before you buy it though because not everything is as it seems in those stores sometimes. I mean, you should check most things you buy no matter if it's a thrift store or to-go order from a restaurant. Almost half the time I don't check my to-go orders, something is wrong or missing and I don't realize it until I get home. If I had just checked while I was at the restaurant like I know I always should, I wouldn't be heart broken over getting a veggie burger when I clearly ordered beef patty. I'm not knocking veggie patties but if I am craving meat, that's what I want.

Maybe even think about donating something before you throw it away as well. My mom usually takes our old clothes somewhere to be donated so that others who might need them can use them. If you can, and it's decent furniture that someone could have, try to get it to a thrift store if you can. I may not recycle, but I do believe that there's good in recycling certain things.

Not to mention, that you can easily refurbish a lot of thrift store items if you're up for the task. That can turn something that clearly seemed used into something that looks new and unique in your home. Sell it too if you want. There are plenty of people that thrift to make money, whether they refurbish anything or not, and I get it. Get your money.

I just know that it's always fun to find things you wouldn't ever expect. Like severed porcelan doll heads just chilling on an antique chair because somehow their bodies have abandoned them.
